Alexandria Police Investigate a Serious Accident Involving a Stolen Moped

Today, at approximately 8:21 p.m., a stolen moped struck a pick-up truck at the intersection of West Glendale Avenue and Russell Road. Alexandria police officers in two marked cruisers were following the moped when the accident occurred.

The moped, a 1995 Tomos, had been reported stolen on Wednesday, September 15, from the 1700 block of Price Street in Alexandria. This evening, the moped's owner observed two juveniles riding the moped on Jefferson Davis Highway and notified a police officer who was working in the area. Patrol officers soon located the moped and began to follow it.

The moped was traveling east in the 100 block of West Glendale Avenue and was entering an intersection when it collided with a 1994 Toyota pick-up truck traveling southbound in the 1100 block of Russell Road. The moped struck the passenger side of the truck, and both juveniles were injured in the accident. The driver of the pick-up, a 37-year-old male resident of Fairfax County, and his passenger, a 31-year-old female resident of Fairfax County, were not injured.

The driver of the moped, a 15-year-old male City resident, was flown by helicopter from the grounds of George Washington Middle School to Fairfax Hospital. He is in serious condition after suffering a severe head injury. The moped passenger, also a 15-year-old male City resident, was transported by ambulance to Alexandria Hospital. He is being treated for minor injuries and is expected to be released tonight.

Police anticipate that the intersection of West Glendale Avenue and Russell Road will be closed for two hours while the Accident Reconstruction Team conducts its investigation. The cause of the accident is under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time
