Alexandria Police to Increase DWI Enforcement with Mobile Operation
During Labor Day Weekend

In an effort to prevent injury and death to citizens, the Alexandria Police Department will substantially increase its enforcement of drunk driving laws on the night of Saturday, September 4, and in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 5.

Additional officers have been assigned to patrol major corridors, targeting motorists who commit hazardous moving violations and exhibit other behaviors which may indicate a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Chief of Police Charles E. Samarra reminds drivers that the maximum penalty for the first conviction of driving under the influence is 12 months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and a 12-month suspension of driving privileges.

There has not been an alcohol-related traffic fatality in Alexandria since 1996.
