Heat Requires Special Precautions
In the City of Alexandria many resources are available for residents during weather emergencies. To keep cool, individuals may go to their neighborhood recreation centers and all three branches of the Alexandria Public Library (check with your rec center or branch library for hours of operation). Landmark Center Mall is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Residents of Alexandria are advised to take precautions to prevent heat related illnesses during the current period of extremely high temperatures and humidity. The Alexandria Fire Department recommends that individuals do the following: If at all possible, stay indoors in air conditioned facilities. When outdoors, stay in the shade and avoid direct sunlight. Before going outside, drink plenty of water. Take water with you and drink it during your outdoor activities. Do not drink beverages containing alcohol or caffeine. Wear clothing that is loose-fitting and light in color. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks from strenuous activities. Early morning and late evening are the best time for workouts. During periods of excessive heat and humidity, the human body is not able to cool itself as effectively as usual. Heat illness occurs when people are unable to perspire enough to cool their bodies. This means that people may experience problems with muscles feeling weak or tired or cramping. They may become dizzy or nauseous and experience vomiting or headaches. If these symptoms occur, you should contact your physician for advice. Individuals who become confused, are vomiting frequently, lose consciousness, or stop sweating or urinating should see a doctor right away. The City provides a hotline for Alexandria residents with non-emergency questions about heat or weather related matters. The number is 703-548-6257. Individuals with fire, medical, or police emergencies should call 911.
