Memorial Circle Tree Planting Postponed
The National Park Service has postponed plans to plant a circle of 49 Corinthian Linden trees at the north entrance to Old Town along Washington Street this month, due to unexpected complications including temporary adverse soil conditions, periods of dry weather, the passing of prime planting season and the desire to assure the layout accuracy of the City's 1932 Memorial Circle traffic rotary.

The plantings, which are now scheduled for this fall, will recreate the landscape features of the memorial to World War I veterans that existed at this location between 1932 and 1962. In order to recreate this historic landscape, the plan may require some modification of the existing landscape. Trees were recently marked to help facilitate the survey necessary for the planting of the new trees.

Currently, the trees are being cared for at the George Washington Memorial Parkway's nursery on Daingerfield Island, not far from their intended home. This project is a joint effort between the National Park Service and the City of Alexandria
