"Live Younger Longer" Theme of May 13 Successful Aging Luncheon
Noted "Dare to Be 100" Author Walter Bortz, II, M.D. is Featured Speaker
Alexandria, Va. (April 16, 1999) � Noted aging specialist and author Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, M.D. will be the featured speaker at a Thursday, May 13, 1999 luncheon that is the second in a series of Successful Aging events sponsored by the Alexandria City Council and City of Alexandria area businesses and nonprofit organizations, luncheon Chair and State Senator Patricia S. Ticer announced today. Area seniors, family members and interested members of the community are invited to attend. Winners of the 1999 Excellence in Aging Awards, presented annually by the Alexandria Agency on Aging, will also be announced at the May 13 event.
Dr. Bortz is on the faculty of Stanford University Medical School. He is the author of numerous lay and scientific publications, including the acclaimed books "Dare to Be 100" (Simon & Schuster, 1996) and "We Live Too Short and Die Too Long" (Bantam, 1991). Both challenge current perceptions of aging and suggest ways to enhance mental and physical vitality.
A national expert on aging issues, Dr. Bortz is past president of the American Geriatric Society. A marathon runner at the age of 69, he is president of the board of directors of the Active Living Institute and a board member of the 50 Plus Fitness Association. He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including "The TODAY Show," Good Morning America, and many others. His columns on aging well have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News and numerous other publications. Dr. Bortz has also received numerous awards for his noteworthy work, including the prestigious Kenneth Cooper Award for Scientific Contribution to Active Living.
Held at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, 625 First Street, Alexandria, the May 13 luncheon will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will include an information fair featuring resources for area seniors. Last year's sold-out Successful Aging Expo included a day-long program of speakers, interactive sessions and a community information fair, and was keynoted by "TODAY Show" personality and native Alexandrian Willard Scott. More than 500 seniors attended.
