Alexandria City Manager Vola Lawson Appoints David B. Sudduth to be Director of Personnel Services
Alexandria City Manager Vola Lawson today announced the appointment of David B. Sudduth as Director of the City’s Department of Personnel Services.
Mr. Sudduth brings to his new position in Alexandria extensive personnel management experience in both the public and private sectors. Mr. Sudduth comes to Alexandria from Fairfax City where he has served as Personnel Director since July 1989. Before joining Fairfax City, Mr. Sudduth worked for AT&T where he held a number of supervisory and senior management positions in personnel during his 31 years with the world-wide telecommunications company. In his most recent assignment with AT&T, Mr. Sudduth was Client Relations Manager responsible for ensuring proper delivery and development of human resources policy for AT&T’s Eastern region (Virginia to Maine) that included 18,000 field employees.
Mr. Sudduth, who begins his new position in Alexandria on August 25, will direct the City’s Department of Personnel Services, which has 20 employees and an annual budget of $1.6 million. As Personnel Services Director, he will plan and direct personnel programs serving over 2,000 full-time City employees. His responsibilities include managing a variety of personnel programs, including employee recruitment, training, development, and performance evaluation; the City’s job classification and compensation plans; the administration of employee pension and health insurance plans; and the City’s employee grievance and disciplinary procedures.
Mr. Sudduth has a bachelor’s degree in personnel management and a master’s in business administration from George Washington University. He and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of four grown children.
