City of Alexandria Honors 180 Employees With 4,300 Years of Service
Alexandria Mayor Kerry J. Donley and Members of City Council will present service awards to 180 City of Alexandria employees who have compiled more than 4,300 years of local government service to the citizens of Alexandria during their careers. The awards ceremony, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.on Monday, January 13, at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, will also honor 33 City employees who retired in 1996.

Among current City employees being honored are Clarence W. Webb, a computer systems analyst with the Police Department who has completed 40 years of service; and three current employees with 35 years of service: Herbert S. Weinshank, a psychiatrist at the Community Mental Health Center; Robert L. Studevent, an Alexandria Library maintenance worker; and Elizabeth Pratt, a school crossing guard.

City Council will also be honoring 33 long-time City employees who retired in 1996, including seven with 30 or more years of service, including Traffic Service Worker William E. Bentz (37 years), Police Department Identification Section Supervisor Clifford Church (35 years), Assistant Registrar of Voters Ruth C. Penn (35 years), Fire Department Battalion Chief James G. Wenzke (34 years), Heavy Equipment Operator Raymond L. Potter (34 years), Police Corporal James D. Feaster (32 years), and Equipment Operator Paul Beni (30 years).

"This annual City awards ceremony is our opportunity to recognize individual employees whose sustained efforts have built the City’s reputation for quality public services," said City Manager Vola Lawson. "We are also acknowledging the contributions of City employees who retired during the past year after a career of service to the citizens of Alexandria," added Mrs. Lawson, who is one of 28 employees marking their 25th year with the City.

In addition to the current City employees with 40 and 35 years of service, the following City employees will be recognized at the awards ceremony:

With 30 years of service: Raymond E. Scott, Fire Department; Mary L. Gibbons, Library; William E. Taylor, Jr., Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse; William Webster, Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities; and Elvin Huggins and Guy Keith, Jr., Department of Transportation and Environmental Services.

With 25 years of service: City Manager Vola Lawson; Brenda J. Williams, Finance Department; Clyde S. Campbell, Leo C. Caporaletti, Willie Manning, Jr., Duane McMaster, Don R. Short, Herbert E. Thomas, and Bert C. Wood, III, of the Fire Department; Robert D. Pritchett, Alexandria Health Department; Mary L. Hill, Department of Human Services; William E. Gimblett, Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse, and Peggy A. Sillex, Department of Personnel Services.

Also with 25 years of service: Mark R. Canoyer, Ronald G. Giovannucci, Victoria A. Hall, Patricia I. Miles, Edward W. Sarra, J. Barry Schiftic, and Epthai C. Stanton of the Police Department; Anthony W. Armstrong and Nathan Stokes, Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities; and Phyllis J. Gallahan, Alvin R. Holland, Robert W. Jackson, Elijah Moore, Julius Moultrie, and Raymond E. Wiley of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services.

With 20 years of service: Edward F. Dadurka, Stephen Z. Jamgochian, and Rose Marie Stewart of the Office of the Clerk of Court; Sandra Kay Flynn, Terrence E. Kisner, Robert M. Luckett, Larry W. Ritchie, Steven W. Rouser, Aubrey A. Schultz, and W. Roy Tuthill of the Fire Department; Michael N. Coleman and Thomas J. Hammitte of the Department of General Services; Barry J. Bates, Lillie P. Collins, Nancy A. Harrison of the Health Department; Linda M. Dell, Ruth S. Hoehne, John F. Powers, Joan C. Wright of the Department of Human Services; Teresa C. Adcock-Stearns, Department of Information Technology Services; Delores A. Brooks, Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse; Errol M. Also with 20 years of service: John J. Boone, Lawrence Elliott, Michael Hopson, and James S. Knight of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities; Jennie J. McGowan of the Office of the Registrar of Voters; and Walter C. Grady, Marie M. Johnstone, and Joe L. Jones of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services.
