June 15 Ceremony at Alexandria Post Office to Mark First Day Issuance of Breast Cancer Awareness Stamp
Alexandria City Manager Vola Lawson and other local leaders in the
fight against breast cancer will join Alexandria Postmaster Michael Harlow
at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 15, to celebrate the first day issuance of a new
Unit ed States Postal Service 32-cent postage stamp promoting breast
cancer awareness. The event will take place at the City's Main Post
Office, 1100 Wythe Street, Alexandria.
"This new postage stamp will help to remind women of the
importance of getting a mammogram at least once a year," said Mrs. Lawson,
who is a survivor of breast cancer. "A woman's chances of surviving
breast cancer are very high if it is detected and treated early," she
said.
Joining Mrs. Lawson at Alexandria's Main Post Office will be members
of the City Manager's Breast Cancer Awareness Task Force who will be
distributing information from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. about how to do breast
self-exams, how to obtain free or low-co st mammograms, and how to become
involved in local breast cancer awareness programs.
The City of Alexandria held its first "Walk to Fight Breast Cancer"
in October 1995. This year's Walk to Fight Breast Cancer is scheduled for
October 26. The Walk raises funds for free mammograms for Alexandria
women.
