[Archived] Question #65: How was the number ($100k) for additional training funds determined? And how much do we currently have in training funds that are used?

Question:

How was the number ($100k) for additional training funds determined?  And how much do we currently have in training funds that are used?

Response:

Based on the 2017 City employee engagement survey, performance measures, and critical business priorities, supervisor and manager training has been identified as a key training initiative for the City.  The additional funding of $100,000 will be dedicated to enhancing manager and supervisor capabilities and effectiveness.  The cost was determined by the number of participants (i.e., population size of target audience), instructor costs, and training content costs (e.g., materials).  Last fall when the City-wide employee engagement survey was undertaken, the survey results indicated that improving supervisor and manager leadership and management training was a key need for the City. A total of $322,480 has been expended on educational assistance, professional development, instructor-led classroom training, and external trainers (i.e., employees seeking career development through degree-seeking programs, certifications, employee skill and competency development).  Additionally, some departments have training funding within their departmental budgets for employee training and development.
