Question:

What would a 1% increase in the meals tax generate for Affordable Housing? What could alternative proposals to the meals tax increase generate for Affordable Housing?

Response:

On December 19, 2017, in response to his request, staff provided a memorandum to Councilmember Willie Bailey regarding the need for increased funding for affordable housing and the feasibility of dedicating a one-percent increase in the meals tax for increasing housing affordability. On February 27, 2018, City Council held a work session on affordable housing funding options including the meals tax and other alternative sources. Copies of the December memorandum and the February slide presentation are attached, and a link to the video recording of that night’s legislative meeting is provided here (skip to docket item #10 for the affordable housing work session discussion).
