[Archived] Question #46: Please report back to Council the outcome of the meeting between RPCA staff and the senior group at Cora Kelly.

Question:

Please report back to Council the outcome of the meeting between RPCA staff and the senior group at Cora Kelly.

Response:

RPCA staff met with the Cora Kelly senior group on March 15 (twenty seniors in attendance). The seniors reached consensus in the March 15 meeting in support of the recommended adjustment in the operating hours at Cora Kelly with the understanding that the center would be accessible for current and future senior programs and organized activities.  A subsequent meeting was requested and held on March 23 (twenty-six attendees). The group indicated they understood the recommended concept of Cora Kelly operating on an on-demand program schedule on weekdays up to 2 pm when the center opens. However, the group unanimously agreed that they believe the Cora Kelly community is best served by the Cora Kelly Recreation Center continuing to operate its current 9 am to 2 pm schedule on Monday-Friday. The seniors indicated they would work to promote increased use of the center’s fitness room and daytime programs for seniors. They also expressed a willingness to pay a nominal fee for arts and other activities specialty activities. The cost of continuing to operate the current operating schedule of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday through Friday is $22,800 for an average daily attendance in the 9:00 am to 2:00 pm timeframe of 22 adults.
