[Archived] Question #44: What is the status of the Sheriff’s inmate work details and what is preventing them from contributing to the Park Operations maintenance work that is slated for reduction?

Question:

What is the status of the Sheriff’s inmate work details and what is preventing them from contributing to the Park Operations maintenance work that is slated for reduction?

Response:

Currently, there are six inmates in the Inmate Work Detail program, and they work every day. Years ago, the Inmate Work Detail assisted Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities with mini parks, but the Sheriff’s Deputy position dedicated to managing that function was eliminated in FY 2014, and the scope of the Inmate Work Detail was reduced. Since then, the Inmate Work Detail has assumed other tasks that were reduced by other agencies, such as cleaning up the trash on Mt. Vernon Avenue. The Sheriff’s Office believes that the Inmate Work Detail has capacity to take on more tasks with its existing staff. For example, they could take care of the flower beds at the "Welcome to Alexandria" sings if asked. However, the Inmate Work Detail cannot assist with mowing the right of ways because a riding mower would be required and the inmates may not operate those vehicles. This additional capacity is, however, subject to change due to the fluctuations in the number of inmates who qualify for the Inmate Work Detail, and the projects would have to be completed as the Inmate Work Detail’s schedule allows.
