[Archived] Question #31: What is the Library circulation per capita in comparison to other jurisdictions?

Question:

What is the Library circulation per capita in comparison to other jurisdictions?

Response:

The circulation per capita in FY 2016 was 8.6, based on circulation of 1,304,000 and population of 151,218. The circulation per registered borrower in FY 2016 was 12.6, based on 103,893 registered borrowers.

The table below compares the FY 2015 total circulation and circulation per capita of neighboring jurisdictions:

The table below compares the FY 2014 total circulation and circulation per capita of library systems which closely resemble the size, population, and structure of Alexandria Library:

 31-2 Chart

When compared to libraries which are similar, Alexandria Library’s circulation per capita is only slightly below the mean and is slightly above the median. It should be noted that the size of a system’s materials budget should also be considered when making this comparison. For example, Arlington County Library and Howard County Library both have much higher materials budgets than Alexandria Library, and the circulation demonstrates that a greater supply of materials encourages more borrowing.
