[Archived] Question #7: How much would it cost to keep the current hours the same (from 9am to 9pm) at Ramsey and at Cora Kelly rather than cut them to 2pm to 9pm?
Question:
Weekday operating hours of 9am-2pm are proposed for elimination at school-based recreation centers, Cora Kelly and William Ramsey, during the school year. What programming or services are currently offered at these recreation centers during this time period and where will they go? How much would it cost to keep the current hours the same (from 9am to 9pm) at Ramsey and at Cora Kelly rather than cut them to 2pm to 9pm? What is the breakdown for each location?
Response:
Both centers have front desk staffing that allows for drop-in availability and access to the fitness rooms from 9am – 2pm on weekdays. At Ramsay this averages over a five-hour period 7 adults a day and at Cora Kelly over a five hour period 22 adults a day. Drop-in availability, including fitness center use, would not be available from 9am-2pm since the front counter staff would not be available for building coverage with the reduction. Front counter staff would be at these centers starting at 2 pm. Drop-in use would continue in the evenings on the weekdays, as well as Saturdays and as currently scheduled in the summer. Fitness users could go to other centers open, such as Charles Houston, during this time. All other programs, classes, and organized events during the day would still take place based on demand, interest and staff availability. The Child and Family Network Preschool would still meet at Cora Kelly on the same schedule. School use of the gymnasiums would still occur per the memorandum of understanding between the City and the Alexandria City Public Schools.
The proposed reduction of $45,572 would need to be restored for both centers to operate the hours of 9am to 2pm. Each center is half of the reduction or $22,786.
